I tried to enter the bedroom as quietly as I could. This was the nth time I crammed and finished school work late again. I had to open the door slowly and not too wide so it wouldn't creak. It didn't matter if I had to squeeze myself through a small space just to secretly get in; if anyone heard me coming in the room so late at night, it would mean deep trouble for me.
I successfully entered and made my way to the bathroom. I closed the door behind me before switching on the lights. I had to make sure no light would get to the bedroom; I stayed with light sleepers you see, so any form of disturbance would wake them up. I quickly got ready for bed, quietly turned off the lights, exited the bathroom, and made my way to the bed.
The room was very dark.
I got to my bed and I fixed my pillows. As I was feeling for my blanket, I glanced at the digital clock to check the time. It was 1:15 am.
"Crap, another late morning for me tomorrow." I thought.
I found my blanket folded under my head pillow. I took it out, spread it, and quickly got under it. I always had the fear of some unknown entity grabbing me and dragging me out of bed if I didn't get under my blanket right away. When I lay down, I turned to my side and closed my eyes. My mind was still active and I couldn't feel a sense of tiredness yet. I started to feel restless so I shifted to the other side, hoping to feel more comfortable.
I did my best to keep my eyes shut because I knew if I opened them, it would fully adjust to the darkness of the room thus making me see my surroundings and making it hard for me to sleep. Though I was afraid of the dark (or rather, what was in it), I always preferred to sleep in a pitch black environment. It helps me fall asleep faster.
I decided to lie on my back for a while since turning to the other side didn't work for me. For around 20 minutes, I went back to my original position, still feeling awake.
I ended up opening my eyes anyway, feeling that I strained myself too much from keeping them shut. When I looked at the clock, it was 1:52 am. I sighed. It was quite ironic that I was getting tired trying to put myself to sleep when in truth, I should be getting tired from staying up late.
I closed my eyes again, hoping for the sleepiness to settle in. The thoughts in my head slowly faded into black and I felt silence penetrating the room. I was in the process of falling asleep--that was a good sign.
I tried opening my eyes to see if I was really getting sleepy; I was still able to but I felt the laziness to keep them open. I closed them again and waited for myself to shut down. For no reason whatsoever, I opened my eyes again and the first thing I saw was the bathroom door. Though the room was dark, I knew it was slightly opened.
Maybe I didn't close the door properly when I hurried to the bed, I thought. Even if I felt tired, I tried to see what was in the bathroom. I spotted something like a long sheet of cloth behind the door. I guessed it was hanging on the opposite door knob and was about to fall since it was touching the floor.
"Tsk. Probably my towel..." I thought.
My eyelids were getting heavy. I closed my eyes, but something told me to open them again. I was also getting the same feeling I had when I was forcing myself to keep my eyes closed, so I had no choice to open them again.
The first thing I saw and made out from the darkness was the silhouette of another towel. It was draping on something. Hm. My sister's towel. I think it was on either our tall towel rack or standing electric fan. I didn't exactly care, I just wanted to sleep. I looked at the bathroom door again and noticed my towel was gone. I assumed it fell already.
I closed my eyes once more, hoping to finally fall asleep. I was already in a dream-like state since I was feeling relaxed. It was if I was physically detached from my surroundings. I got lazy to move even if I wanted to.
Without knowing, I was falling asleep with my eyes half-open. It eventually started to feel weird, so I opened my eyes again. This was getting annoying.
My eyes met the towel rack/ electric fan again. The towel on it looked longer because it covered the whole thing. Yep, that was the fan alright, its head probably bent because of the weight of the towel. I noticed that it seemed closer compared to when I saw it at first. It was probably because I didn't pay attention to it earlier. Maybe that's what it really looked like in the dark.
At last, I closed my eyes and felt a sense of tranquility. Everything was going well until I heard something hit our window. Startled, I briefly got up and looked at our window. A stick blown by the wind, maybe?
I sighed and slowly lay down. I rested on my back again to get myself to relax from the unexpected disturbance. Finally, I was feeling sleepiness.
I shifted back to my original position--I shouldn't have...
Because right in front of me was a girl's dirty face, very pale and slightly covered by her frizzy hair. She was staring at me with those huge eyes; her pupils were dilated that even the dark couldn't hide how defined they were. And that evil smile of hers, it stretched from ear to ear, showing her sharp decaying teeth. She was resting her tilted head on one arm which was on my bedside and I saw her long, black dress that stretched all the way to the bathroom. I heard her silently laughing.
Terrified, I tried to shut my eyes, but the girl reached out her hand, held the back of my head and brought her face towards mine until our noses touched.
"Shhh..."
